Did I mention he's a rock star?
He is.

This is the new clubhouse. Well, it was new on Valentine's Day and then shortly after Valentine's Day it was disassembled by some neighborhood vandals and the club dispersed after a game of war gone wrong.
This is the view from inside the club. The members of the club collected various items on from people's yards on trash pickup day to adorn their new hangout. That woman standing there, the one that's as tall as that tree, is Kennedy. You might not have recognized her because she was a little kid yesterday and woke up today fully grown. The other little darling in the photo is Jasmine. She was a little kid yesterday and when she woke up this morning, much to her dismay, she was still a little kid.
This is the other angle from the inside. Each little piece has some significance. The trees create the walls all around the perimeter of the club. There's a perfect little clearing created by nature alone and destined to be filled with children.
This is the picnic table donated by the club's neighbor "Mr. Nicey-nice". We like him very much because without his contribution, the first annual club Valentine's picnic. Let me introduce you to the club members. Starting on the left in the green hoodie, that's Alfonso. Next to him with the mohawk is Trek. Micah is next in the green shirt. I am directly behind Micah wearing a green shirt; apparently he didn't hear me say, "Say cheese!". You can see my shirt behind him. I'm also holding Deisha who loves the sun more than anything else in this life. Kennedy is at the head of the table; she is the club secretary and quite a party planner if you ask me. There in the sunglasses and glam sunglasses is Miss Tiffany, Trek's mom. She was there because she was invited. For whatever reason, the joy of these kids' lives is having their mothers participate in their neighborhood antics. I wish someone would tell me that so that I would participate more before my kids start shooing me away from their neighborhood friends because apparently I am indifferent to what brings them joy. Trin is on the bench in front of Miss Tiff but you can't see her because Zach is standing up making last minute adjustments to the various treats on the table. Zach is the club president and he's awesome; he's awesome unless he's playing with James and then he's not very nice. Behind Zach is Jas, she's always awesome no matter who she's playing with. And then next there on the end are Tre and Leila, the darlings of the club. Tre is the energy and Leila is the sugar.
Avila remains our single most favorite place to escape to. Somehow we managed to visit on the most beautiful day in February last week. This is Deisha's first experience in the sand. For as feisty as she generally is, she sat there mesmerized for a long time. The sand is remarkably fine so it's like standing on shifting silk. She couldn't quite figure it out. After she realized she wasn't going anywhere, she tried to pick some up and have taste of it. Needless to say she didn't like it too much. I would've loved to catch that on film, but I was frantically sweeping out her mouth and hands. It wasn't long before she was climbing up the rocks with the rest of the kids.
Kennedy brought along a Spongebob kite that she and Dale got up high and mighty in no time flat. After he set sail into the wild blue yonder, Kennedy lost interest but not Dale. He stayed and flew the Bikini Bottom hero long after she abandoned him.
We never swim.I don't know if you know this, but there are sharks in the ocean, and more specifically shark sightings right here on this beach. More from the fact that even at eighty degrees, the water is freezing. But this mini tide pool was quite a drawing card for my young'uns; it's right in front of Jasmine and Tre in the background. Because we had been sick off and on for so long, I insisted that no one get their feet wet. I'm telling you it was a severe test of sheer will for them to stay out of it. The water was so shallow and so far from the ocean, it didn't seem like the ocean. It didn't even seem like water, it was "like, just a puddle". Tre's mind always keeps me guessing; his reasoning is so different than mine.
Since there was no hope of splashing around, the attention gradually moved to the rocks up the beach.
The boys turned to an adventure as soon as their bare feet hit the warm smooth surface of the stone. I'm sure it was Zelda related, as most of their adventures are.
After the string to the kite balled itself into a knotty mess, I spent about forty-seven minutes untangling it- long enough to wear down Dale's enthusiasm of sailing the high skies and he joined us on the back forty.
I'm never less taken with the beauty of the coast; every time we go it's like looking at it for the first time...
Little man is way too cute for his own good!
Gobble, gobble, gobble. I forgot this Nana tradition and Kennedy said, "MOM! Apple turkeys! We forgot to make apple turkeys!" This was last night at Wal-Mart after we'd already been to the grocery store and all of it's chaotic bliss. So I said, "Alright, let's get the marshmellows and we'll use the apples I bought for the apple crisp." Which they used and then almost immediately removed the candy and marshmellows from after these shots were taken.
I mean, it's a tradition. We take them very seriously, which I am SO thankful for this year because our little traditions kept us busy while we were so far from home.
I love that there's noise. I keep flashing back to what must be happening at my mom's house right now where all of my other siblings and their families are, eating turkey and chasing kids up and down the stairs, and passing babies from arms to arms, and napping in front of a football game. My house is busy with excitement. And even though it's not snowing, it's cold today, which feels right.
